FairPoint Communications is the seventh largest local telephone company in the U.S., delivering modern communications technology since 1991. For the relocation of their executive offices headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Smith Harris focused on portraying strength, stability and an open feel to satisfy the vision of their new image.

The floor plate was designed to allow for light for all employees by the use of exterior glass panels and low cubicle workstation panels. The custom designed reception desk, seen as you enter the space exhibits both durability and sophistication through the use of exposed stainless hardware bolted to backlit Lucite panels at the transaction ledge and the application of smooth brushed wood front panels below.

This somewhat robust style is carried throughout the space with the use of additional metallic finishes and the construction of another custom furniture piece that is exposed to the open work area. The free standing bar and the organic shaped countertop appear to be bolted to the surface below them, accentuating their ability to stand the test of time.

The use of various shades of gray are continued throughout to represent a sturdy feel, while the contrasting rich yellows and soft beiges keep the space feeling warm and inviting.

When Nucor Corporation, notably the U.S.’s leading manufacturer of structural steel products and a principal steel recycler in the world, decided to move their headquarters, SHDA was given the opportunity to redefine the company’s image. We accomplished this by moving them to a more modern design approach, while maintaining their traditional core values and desire for modesty.

In order to achieve this “transitional” environment that combined both contemporary elements and traditional style, our designers created a predominately clean, sleek feel throughout the space by using straight lines, contemporary light fixtures and modern artwork. The combination of both glass and metallic materials used with classic cherry wood paneling and wall covering gives the space a feeling of both stability and newness.

Nucor occupies three different floors in the building they purchased and felt it was very important to keep all divisions connected. The custom monumental steel staircase serves as both a connection between the three floors and as a focal point to visibly represent Nucor’s steel products. The renovated building lobbies integrate the design of Nucor with a traditional look desired by tenants in the market area.

A global leader in the digital imaging development tool division, Lead Technologies was finally ready to relocate their headquarters. At the same time, they wanted to re-development their appearance and work environment to reflect their technology based theology, which included long shift hours for their employees, more virile aesthetics and a respect for sustainable design.

In order to achieve this, our designers first focused on creating a comfortable environment for employees who might work through the night. Next, we capitalized on the abundance of natural light during the day by providing sidelights at all offices located along the exterior glass. The metallic finishes and cool color tones emphasize a strong feel within the space balanced by pops of green. The open ceiling in the work areas, environmental friendly carpet tiles, energy efficient light fixtures and fingerprint access to the space contribute to their forward thinking.

As the nation’s leading equipment maintenance management program, the Remi Group wanted its new Charlotte office to exude a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Along with the desire for a great aesthetic and functional work space, the Remi Group was very interested in a project that would embrace sustainable design and seek LEED certification.

As one steps off of the elevator, the full height glass wall and entry doors provide a very welcoming and approachable environment. The warm, neutral tones from the outside lobby are carried into the reception, along with a soft geometric floor pattern that resembles the square granite and marble tiles in the Elevator Lobby. The Remi Group logo which is elegantly etched into the Conference Room glass wall can also be seen from the outside before you even enter the suite.

The existing base building for this project was LEED certified, thus allowing us to easily continue the LEED approach for the interior project. We were able to incorporate sustainable materials, energy efficient lighting and a comfortable work space without exceeding the budget.

The Lash Group, a consulting firm with over 20 years experience in innovative design, development and implementation of healthcare products and solutions, has been a client of Smith Harris for nearly 15 years. What started out as a one person company has grown to over 800 employees, acquiring close to 150,000 square feet of office space in Charlotte, NC alone.

Our most recent challenge was to establish a new identity for the organization that would integrate “old” with “new” while still representing the longevity of their business and highlighting the importance of the employees. To achieve this employee-centric environment, our designers refreshed the finishes throughout, upgraded the lighting and furniture, and added a 3,500 square foot cafeteria for employees to enjoy.

While the open office areas remain sleek, functional and flexible for high density staffing, the cafeteria encourages a more playful environment where employees can take a break, socialize and recharge.

Noted as the Firm of Choice in the Southeast, Cherry Bekaert & Holland pride themselves as being one of the largest regional CPA firms; specializing in a variety of accounting, audit, tax and consulting needs.

Because CBH caters to a diverse and successful client base, it was important to create a grand and distinguished impression while maintaining a transitional aesthetic integrity. To do this, SHDA took advantage of the building’s existing architecture by utilizing the high ceilings, impressive views of Uptown Charlotte and presence of natural light throughout the building.

The finish palette, consisting of cherry woods, warm granite and combinations of cream and gray fabrics and flooring reflect a more sophisticated appearance. Smith Harris Design has been an integral part of the design process in multiple offices for Cherry Bekaert along the east coast including Fairfax, VA, Miami, FLA, Hilton Head Island, SC, Richmond, VA and Raleigh, NC. We have worked closely with them to develop design standards to create image consistency throughout the region.
